What is burr comb

March 15, 2024March 15, 2024

Burr comb, also known as bridge comb or brace comb, is the irregular and excess comb built by honey bees in unintended spaces within the hive. This comb often connects frames or sections of the hive, crosses empty spaces, or extends beyond the prescribed boundaries. While it’s a natural behavior of bees to build comb, burr comb can be problematic for beekeepers as it can complicate hive inspections, make frame removal difficult, and cause disturbances in hive organization. Managing burr comb is an essential aspect of hive maintenance to ensure the smooth operation and health of the colony.
